However, if you\u2019re finding it hard to make ends meet, you can apply to access your super early to help pay your living expenses.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/mlcsocialfeed.p2.clientcommunity.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Early_access_to_your_super_due_to_financial_hardship.png\" width=\"570\"><\/p>\n<h3>Severe financial hardship<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re experiencing severe financial hardship, you can apply to access some of your super. This can help pay for basic expenses to support you and your family.<\/p>\n<p>To apply for early release of super under grounds of severe financial hardship, you must meet one of the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 \u00a0 You\u2019re under your preservation age and:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Have received an eligible Centrelink or Department of Veterans\u2019 Affairs (DVA) payment continuously for at least 26 weeks before applying and are still in receipt of these payments at the time of your application,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 AND<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Satisfy the Trustee that you can\u2019t meet reasonable and immediate family living expenses.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the Trustee is satisfied, the trustee will determine a single lump sum amount of between $1,000 (or the balance of your benefit if it is less than $1,000) and $10,000.\u00a0You can only receive one payment every 12-months.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 \u00a0 You\u2019re over your preservation age and:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Have received an eligible Centrelink or DVA payment for a total of 39 weeks since reaching your preservation age,\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 AND<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>You\u2019re in paid employment for less than 10 hours a week, or you\u2019re not employed at all, at the time of your application.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you qualify on this basis, the Trustee may release your entire benefit.<\/p>\n<h3>What are the tax implications?<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ll deduct withholding tax from your balance when we process the payment. Therefore, it\u2019s important to consider how an early withdrawal will impact:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Your retirement income<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Any tax you may need to pay<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Insurances paid through your super<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>The impact taking a super payment may have on any government benefits you\u2019re receiving<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Everyone\u2019s situation is different and depending on your stage of life, retirement plans and other specific goals, you may want to call us today if you have any further questions.<\/p>\n<h3>Your financial wellbeing<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019d like some help assessing your eligibility for benefits, and strategies to improve your retirement savings, a financial coach may help set you on the right track. Their job is to help you with every aspect of your financial life, while keeping you on track to achieve your goals.<\/p>\n<h3>Make a financial hardship withdrawal application<\/h3>\n<p>If you receive benefits from Centrelink, you will need to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Complete the Early release of super form, and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Provide Proof of Identity, through any two of following forms of identification:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>a valid Passport<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>current Driver\u2019s Licence<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>current Medicare Card<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you receive benefits from the Department of Veterans\u2019 Affairs (DVA), you will need to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p>Contact the DVA on\u00a0133 254\u00a0or go to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dva.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dva.gov.au<\/a>\u00a0to obtain a confirmation you\u2019ve received an Australian Commonwealth Income Support Benefit payment for a continuous period of 26 weeks. Check the date on the letter as it\u2019s only valid for 21 days after issue.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Complete the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlc.com.au\/content\/dam\/mlc\/documents\/forms\/mkbs\/mkbs-application-for-early-release-form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Early release of super form<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Attach the original copy of the DVA confirmation letter, and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Make sure you complete the Proof of Identity as set out on page 7 of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlc.com.au\/content\/dam\/mlc\/documents\/forms\/mkbs\/mkbs-application-for-early-release-form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Early release of super form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once we\u2019ve received all the information requested, your application will be reviewed and will usually be processed within 5 working days.<\/p>\n<h3>Other situations you can access super early<\/h3>\n<p>There are other unique circumstances where you may be able to access your super early. But there are strict eligibility requirements you must adhere to.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these circumstances include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>First Home Super Saver scheme: If you\u2019re a first-home buyer, you can personally put a little extra money into your super \u2013 up to $15,000 a year (and up to a total of $50,000 contributions across all years) \u2013 and then access this money, as well as any returns you make from it (as calculated by the ATO based on a set rate), to put towards a home deposit for your first home<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Compassionate grounds: if you cannot meet certain expenses like medical, funeral costs or mortgage repayments to prevent you from losing your home, you can apply to withdraw some of your super.
